The authors argue that the relationship extends beyond the commonly recognised effect of pain disrupting sleep. Evidence suggests that insufficient or fragmented sleep may also heighten an individual's sensitivity to pain, creating a self-perpetuating cycle that becomes increasingly difficult to break.

Neuroinflammation Emerges as a Key Factor

According to the Portuguese researchers, one of the central biological processes involved is neuroinflammation. This occurs when immune-related cells within the brain become activated, leading to changes in neurological signalling pathways and hormonal regulation.

The study indicates that prolonged neuroinflammatory activity may contribute both to sleep disruption and to increased pain sensitivity.
