Health authorities in France are reporting a continued expansion of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, across several in the south-west, including parts of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The increasing presence of this invasive species has raised concerns not only about nuisance levels but also about its potential role in transmitting infectious diseases.

The Asian tiger mosquito is recognised for its adaptability and ability to thrive in both urban and semi-rural environments. Originally native to Southeast Asia, it has spread across Europe over recent decades, aided by global trade, travel, and changing climatic conditions. According to the World Health Organization, this species is capable of transmitting viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, making its expansion a significant public health issue.

In the affected areas of France, a large proportion of the population is now living in zones where the mosquito is established. Residents have reported persistent exposure to bites throughout the day, reflecting the species’ daytime feeding behaviour, which distinguishes it from many other mosquito types.
